The Marazion 10K took place on Sunday 29th September. The race sees participants run a one-loop, left-turn route starting below Trevenna Square in Marazion. With only 131m of elevation, this one is basically flat by Cornish standards. Sunday saw weather warnings in place for both wind and rain, which added an extra level of challenge for participants, but support on the route from our brilliant marshals and some hardy spectators was still fantastic despite the conditions.
As it’s Hayle Runners’ own race, the Marazion 10K is a whole-club effort and those members who weren’t running were still out in force, stationed along the route to provide support as race marshals, as well as managing the water stop, staffing Race HQ, and helping with setting up and taking down the course. This required extra fortitude in the terrible weather and the race couldn’t have been run without all hands on deck.
Over 480 valiant runners braved the weather to take part, which was a fantastic turnout. Daniel Soltys from Cornwall AC took first place and was first man home in a phenomenal time of 32:32. He was closely followed by Steve Reynolds from Truro Running Club in second, and Freddie Fielding from Cornwall AC in third place. First woman home was Anna Harrold from Truro Running Club, who completed the race in an amazing 35:54. Katie Knowles – also from Truro Running Club – took second, with Katie Walker from Cornwall AC in third place for the women.
The Hayle men’s and women’s teams put in a fantastic effort, with the men’s team managing to scoop third place – a huge well done to Sam Farmer, Neil Hayhurst, Jordan Morant, Steven Hagan, Liam O’Neill, and Martin Wright. The women fought hard as well and came in fourth, which was a great effort from Anna Goodman, Lucy Paull, Fiona Gamble, Julie Towers, Emma Butterworth, and Lia Foreman.
Several of the Green Army also took home age category prizes, so a huge well done to:
Jemma Kearney – 2nd – Women under 20
Fiona Gamble – 2nd – Women 35-39
Lucy Paull – 3rd – Women 40-44
Julie Towers – 1st – Women 60-64
Diane Warren – 1st – Women 70-74
Martin Wright – 3rd – Men under 20
Neil Hayhurst – 1st – Men 40-44
Steven Hagan – 2nd – Men 40-44
Scott Abraham – 2nd – Men 50-54
Jon Eldon – 2nd – Men 60-64
Stewart Townend – 1st – Men 80+
“The fact that 483 runners took part in the Marazion 10k says a great deal about the lengths runners will go to for their club’s goals and their own competitiveness considering the conditions on the course today,” said club chairman Richard Collett. “Speaking for Hayle Runners, we had a lot of new members on the course today proudly sporting their greens who all had a fantastic time, and we were so pleased to see smiles on their faces running up the final hill into a 50mph headwind. Hopefully that bit won’t put anyone off next year…”
Richard Collett
Club Chairman
A huge well done again to everybody who took part and a thank you to everybody who took time out of their weekend to ensure the race could happen.
