On Sunday 18 Hayle runners took part in arguably the most challenging race in the GP series when they were part of a field of nearly 400 at the Cornish marathon.
This challenging route sees runners completing 26.2 miles on roads around the beautiful East Cornwall countryside. Participants have the chance to take in landmarks including Golitha Falls, Colliford Lake, Dozemary Pool, Jamaica Inn, Bolventer Valley and King Doniets Stones. The overcast but dry day provided good running conditions and there was great support on the course to spur the runners on.
The Hayle women’s team did brilliantly and managed to bring home first place in the team competition! A huge congratulations to Kirsty Medlock, Fiona Gamble, Andrea Simmons, and Lucy Paull.
The men’s team also did fantastic work to scoop third place, so a huge well done to Neil Hayhurst, Liam O’Neill, Mark Williams, and Ian Curnow.
In addition to valuable contributions to the women’s and men’s teams, Andrea Simmons and Neil Hayhurst took first place in their respective age categories as well. A tremendous effort.
“Milder conditions this year made for a pleasant change for this year’s Cornish Marathon. As usual, supporters and Jelly Babies were out in force cheering and fuelling everyone’s hilly efforts. As the final event in the 2024 GP season we were pleased to see a couple of age category prizes make it back to Hayle as well as winning 1st in the ladies team competition and 3rd in the mens. We’re incredibly proud of the Green Army this weekend.”
