Hayle Runners October roundup

The year might be winding down but there’s no sign of the Green Army doing the same. October saw runners from Hayle heading far and wide to take part in events all over the country. So, settle down and read on to find out what the club was getting up to…

Things got off to a strong start on the 4th of October with Nick Peters and Melissa Nicholas beginning the gruelling Atlantic Coast Challenge. This event sees participants complete three marathons across three days along the coast path from Padstow to Land’s End. A phenomenal effort from both Nick and Melissa, who completed all three days.

The 6th also sees the Atlantic Coast Ultra happening in the opposite direction, from Hayle to Newquay. Liam O’Neill completed this 40-mile ultramarathon in 7:40:40.

Also on the 6th, Corinne Gerrard and Curtis Hayes were completing the Chester marathon. Corinne finished in 3:41:04 and Curtis in 3:27:04 – both brilliant efforts.

As if that weren’t enough, a large contingent ran the Cardiff Half Marathon, which is always a super-popular event with an amazing atmosphere. The Hayle contingent included:

Anne Cobell – 02:52:57
Jonathan Eldon – 01:32:46
Anna Goodman – 01:44:13
Frazer Humbles – 01:34:21
Simon Jeffs – 01:23:23
Andrew Searle – 01:41:25
Andrea Simmons – 01:44:42
Claire Stone – 02:11:34
Jake Summers – 01:25:18
Julie Towers – 01:43:05
Diane Warren – 01:53:03

On the 10th, Adam Gore took part in the Royal Band Service Half Marathon at the Meon Valley Nature Reserve in Hampshire. And, in fact, when we say he ‘took part’ we mean he actually won the whole thing. He completed the race in 1:19:54.

The 13th was another busy day, with Joe Beer in Chippenham to take part in the Lightning Bolt 10K. He completed the race in 38:54.

On the same day Simon Jeffs was even further up country. He completed the Wirral 10K in 38:17

Sticking with the 13th, there was a strong Hayle presence at the Freedom Racing Porthtowan 10K. This one follows the coast path from Porthtowan via Chapel Porth and to the top of St Agnes Beacon before heading back to Porthtowan.

The hardy runners taking on this challenging race were:

Emma Butterworth 01:04:28
Jack Eadie 00:59:32
Jacob Gardner 00:49:14
James Manning 01:00:49
Nick Morley 01:19:50
Nicholas Peters 01:05:01
Stuart Smith 01:08:20

There was also a group in Bournemouth for the 10K and Half Marathon there. Both of these races feature stunning coastal routes taking in both Boscombe and Bournemouth piers. Sue Durrant finished the 10K in 1:09:34. Chris Cambell and Ian Curnow both took part in the Half Marathon distance, with Chris finishing in 2:06:18 and Ian in 1:06:21.

The 19th saw Anne Cobell, Dave Guffick, Emma Johns, Sarah Johns, Jared Sanderson, Andrew Searle and Paje Susini taking part in the Runway Runaround, a 10K loop around Perranporth airfield. This event is to raise money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance so a very worthy cause.

Sunday the 20th saw a veritable smorgasbord of races taking place. To begin with, Laura Haghani (1:55:26), Kirsty Medlock (1:39:07), and Naomi Ward (1:46:44) took part in a Half Marathon around the Goodwood Motor Circuit, what an amazing location for a race. Unfortunately the weather on the day was less than favourable.

Stuart Smith was up in Hertfordshire to complete the Stevenage Marathon, which he did in 4:46:45.

Closer to home, it was the Halloween Twilight Run which is a headtorch run around the grounds of the Scorrier estate with, apparently, “the threat of lurking zombies” (see the banner photo above).

There were a variety of distance options. Liam O’Neill ran, and indeed won (!), the 10K race in 39 minutes. Nick Morley took on the 5K, completing it in 39:45.

A selection of the Green Army were up at the Eden Project to take part in both the marathon and the half marathon.

Daniel Millington (3:45:26) and Melissa Nicholas (4:18:27) both completed the marathon distance. Melissa even came in as 7th woman.

Nathan Cudmore 1:52:44
Jemma Kearney 2:35:45
Bethany Lynes 2:15:55
Julie Towers 2:18:22

A huge well done to everybody who took on any kind of event in October. There were almost certainly more people completing more events than were listed here, and everybody did the club proud no matter what they were up to. We hope you had a wonderful October and we’ll see you for the next roundup at the end of November.
