The drive to the top of the county was taken on by 41 Hayle runners on Sunday, September 7 for race 11 of the Cornish GP series.
Treggy 7 is a 7-mile circular race starting at Launceston Town Square and was completed this year in torrential rain.
That didn’t stop a swathe of Hayle runners pulling off impressive performances and taking home some solid silverware, despite an unforgiving 75m of elevation at mile 3 – described as ‘the never-ending hill’.
The first mile heads down hill, out of town on onto the undulating rural roads. From their Hayle runners faced a half mile climb to the village, after leaving the village at mile 4 the last 3 miles were mainly downhill.
A fantastic finish line awaited in the grounds of Launceston Castle, with awards taking place in the Town Hall.
Standing front and centre ready to collect those awards were Hayle ladies who continued to show their might in yet another GP race.
Melissa Nicholas led the charge, taking gold in the 35-39 age category and fought hard to the end taking fourth place lady overall – which she grabbed from the hands of her closest competitor just 10 seconds behind her.
The ladies’ team was also made up of Fiona Gamble – third in the 40-44 category, Corinne Gerrard – second in the 55-59 category, Anna Goodman, Julie Towers – second in the 60-64 category and Zoe Renowden.
Hayle men’s team celebrated silver taking second place thanks to Sam Farmer – third in the under 35s, Liam Rowe, Francis Malone-Lee – third in the 45-59 category, Neil Hayhurst, Edmund Bennett and Liam O’Neill – third in the 35-39 category.
The successes didn’t stop there with Ian Curnow clinching gold in the 55-59 category, Steve Wherry taking gold in the 60-64 age group, Jon Eldon in first place in the 65-69 category and Rowan Miles securing gold in the 70-74 age category. Chunky Penhaul took third place in his age group – 75-79 and at the top of table was Stewart Townsend with gold in the 80+ group. Aside from the well-deserved celebrations of the prize winners, congratulations were in order for Sam Kearney with a 5-minute 7-mile PB and Lee Burford who smashed a 4-min PB and a new 10km PB.
