Zig-zagging near the Devon border

With 8 miles of outstanding trails and coastal scenery it was a trip worth taking to Bude for the 10 Hayle Runners who entered the Pirate Run on Sunday, September 21st.

Competitors were treated to a zig-zagging route around the north of the county for number 3 in the multi-terrain race series (MTRS).

With 370+ metres of elevation this was one hilly race to behold and a new challenge for some who were taking part for the first time.

As always Hayle Runners were invited to step up to the podium to collect team and age category prizes.

Hayle’s men’s team took bronze thanks to Liam O’Neill, Ian Curnow, Jon Eldon and Frazer Humbles.

Claire Stone and Deborah Sturges represented the women for Hayle Runners. It was Deb’s first time running the Bude Pirate Run, which she described as ‘tough’ as she pulled a face that meant it was even harder. Debs in now 3 for 3 out of the MTRS races so far.

There were age category prizes for 3 Hayle Runners, with Liam O’Neill placing seventh overall and taking silver in the 35-39 age category.

Ian Curnow took bronze in the 55-59 group, and can anyone guess where Jon Eldon placed in the 65-69 category? That’s right it was a gold place win for Jon.

A substantial proportion of money raised from the race is given as a donation to the Bude Surf Life Saving Club each year, with thanks to all who took part. Race 4 of the series is Tywarnhayle on October 12th, where there will be celebrations at the annual presentations for the 2024-2025 series.
