The final race of the 2026 Cornwall Multi-Terrain Race Series certainly lived up to its name, with 18 Hayle Runners taking on the challenging Meet Your Max 10K trail race on Wednesday, June 17.
Hosted by Truro Running Club, the beautiful but demanding course took runners on a scenic loop around Malpas. A fast downhill start on tarmac quickly gave way to humid woodland trails, technical descents, seemingly endless steps and rocky terrain, before the sting in the tail, the long climb up St Clement’s Hill to the finish line.
The challenging route demanded concentration throughout, but competitors were rewarded with excellent marshalling, fantastic support and another superbly organised event.
The Green Army was represented by 13 men and five ladies, with the men’s team securing second place overall thanks to the efforts of Liam O’Neill, Jake Summers, Jon Eldon and Andrew James, all of whom finished inside the top 20.
There was further success in the age categories, with Liam O’Neill taking second place in the Male 35-39 category, Andrew James securing bronze in the Male 45-49 age group and Jon Eldon continuing his remarkable season by winning the Male 65-69 category.
The race also marked the first appearance in green for members Jake Summers and Jack Searle, who both made impressive debuts for Hayle Runners.
There were plenty of personal successes throughout the field too. Anne Cobell and Florence Davies-Kirsop both took almost five minutes off their previous course times, while Andrew James produced the biggest improvement of the evening, knocking an incredible seven minutes off his previous best on the course.
“Meet Your Max is one of those races that sounds fairly innocent until you reach Malpas and start questioning your running choices that brought you there.
“The course throws absolutely everything at you, fast descents, technical trails, endless steps and this year, enough humidity in the woods to make the race feel positively soupy.
“Finishing second in the men’s team competition, welcoming Jake and Jack into their first races in green and seeing so many course PBs made it a brilliant way to round off another fantastic MTRS season.”
