Hayle Runners June roundup

There was a strong start for Hayle Runners in June as Kate Frame completed the Cotswolds 113 in under six hours, with a time of 5:56:12 on the first of the month.

The middle-distance triathlon and aquabike contest saw Kate take on a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and the cherry on top was no less than a half marathon run. Ashton Keynes water park hosted the event aimed at beginners but great for the more seasoned competitor looking for a PB.

Just two days later on June 3rd Adam Gore smashed out an impressive time of 17:18 for the Run Exe 5k.

There was success for Steve Maclaren, who comfortably completed the Mhor half marathon on June 8th in under two hours, with a time of 1:54:22.

Running from the city to the sea taking in some breath-taking views was the setting for the Swansea half marathon elsewhere on June 8th. Andrea Simmons wore an England Masters vest as she smashed out an amazing run of 1:42:47, coming first in her age category by 20 minutes.

Hayle Runners travelled far north on June 11th for the Bude Lifeboat Run, one of the final races of the MTRS season.

Liam O’Neill, Kieran Murrant, Jon Eldon, Andrew Searle, Fiona Gamble, Susan Thomas, Emma Bowden, Julie Frost, Yelda Müge Parsons, Suzie Smith and Hels Cattran took on the single lap course comprising of tarmac, concrete, cycleway, canal towpath, farm track and footpaths.

Crossing the finish line and taking second in their age-categories were Hayle Runners’ own dream team, Liam O’Neill (35-39) and Fiona Gamble (40-44). Bude couldn’t put a stop to Jon Eldon’s age category (60-64) winning streak, once again taking the top spot.

Was he going for a club record? Quite possibly! Dan Costello took on the Cornwall v Devon 5k on June 14th and crossed the finish line in 15:44.

The same day Sam Dixon took on her self-professed first – and last – trail half marathon, travelling to Rame Head, near Torpoint, for this tough course covering two loops and offering runners 378 meters of elevation gain across varied terrain.

What do you get your dad for Father’s Day if he’s a runner? Entry to a race of course. Rowan Muliss was only too happy to take part in the Hampshire Hoppit 10k on June 15th thanks to a gift from his daughter Jess.

Formerly known as Meet Your Max, race 11 of 11 of the MTRS season saw this year’s Truro Trail race take place on June 18th.

A mixture of road, trail, track, hills and muddy sections tempted Liam O’Neill, Neil Hayhurst, Kieran Murrant, Jon Eldon, Todd Reynolds, Andrew Searle, Fiona Gamble, Florence Davies-Kirsop, Jonathan Olds, Kelly Bills, Chris Butler, Simon Mayho, Julie Frost, Hels Cattran, Yelda Müge Parsons and Anne Cobell to the race.

Congratulations go out to Hayle men’s team for taking second place overall. Liam O’Neill, Neil Hayhurst, Kieran Murrant and Jon Eldon making up the dream team.

Well done also goes out to the Hayle Runners’ ladies’ team, which consisted of Fiona Gamble, Florence Davies-Kirsop, Louise Ollivier and Kelly Bills, placing fifth overall. Not content with placing fifth in the ladies’ team, Fiona Gamble came in second in her 40-44 age category. Matched by Neil Hayhurst placing second in the men’s 40-44 category.

Liam O’Neill notched up a fifth place result in the men’s 35-39 category, but of course it was Hayle Runners’ 60-64 category supremo Jon Eldon who ran to first place a good six minutes ahead of the man behind him!

The Gecko Gathering Siblython on June 21 was not an event for the faint hearted! Nick Peters took on the marathon distance, while Naomi Connon and Mickee Jelf tackled the 50k. That’s 11 laps and more than 32 miles. Mickee came first in her age group, while Naomi came second in hers!

Flying the Hayle Runners flag on the Isles of Scilly on June 22nd was Ian Seabury and Stuart Thomson, who crossed the water to compete in a 60k over five islands in one day challenge.

Back on the mainland the same day, the Smugglers Pirate saw Simon Mayho, Margaret Clark, Susan Thomas, Hels Cattran, Julie Frost, Alex Brooks and Michelle Fitt entertain this epic half marathon, with Trish Merrett completing the Smugglers Corsair.

Held at Land’s End, these two challenging trail races travelled the South West Coast Path. Half marathoners ran from Land’s End to Cape Cornwall and back, while Trish extended her race to Mousehole and back.

Finally on June 28th the St Ives Biathlon was a successful competition for Ross Keeler who came third. Daniel Millington, Oliver Brunnock and Kate Frame also took part in this event organised by St Ives surf lifesaving club to raise funds and raise the charity’s profile.

Congrats to all on a cracking June of running.
