Yesterday 16 runners from Hayle headed up to Pensilva to take part in the Cornish marathon! The marathon is the final race in the Cornish Grand Prix, so it’s an essential event (or necessary evil, depending on how you feel about marathons) for those looking to complete every race in the series.
The route takes in sights including Golitha Falls, Colliford Lake, Dozemary Pool, Jamaica Inn, Bolventer Valley and King Doniets Stones, so participants were treated to a comprehensive tour of East Cornwall as they ran. They were also treated to comprehensive sampling of most kinds of weather, which ranged from sunny and blue sky all the way through to grey and miserable during the course of the race.
A few Hayle runners took home age category prizes:
- Melissa Nicholas – 3rd – Women Under 35
- Kirsty Medlock – 1st – Women 40-44
- Jacob Gardner – 3rd – Men under 35
- Neil Hayhurst – 1st – Men 40-44
- Scott Abraham – 3rd – Men 50-54
- Steve Fuller – 1st – Men 55-59
- Tim Twiggs – 3rd – Men 55-59
In addition to individual awards, both women and men teams took home team prizes too. The women’s team came in 3rd overall – well done to Melissa Nicholas, Kirsty Medlock, Lucy Paull, and Kelly Bills. The men’s team went one better coming in second place overall – huge congratulations to Jacob Gardner, Neil Hayhurst, Steve Fuller, and Scott Abraham.
“The Cornish Marathon is a tough route with some fantastic views over Bodmin Moor, and it’s a hell of a challenge to finish the GP series with. The weather was predictably Cornish, the course was well marshalled, and event was well organised by East Cornwall Harriers. Some of us are looking forward to a rematch next year.”

It goes without saying that every runner who took part put in a brilliant effort, and completing a marathon is a huge achievement no matter the time. Well done to every runner who took part! And huge thanks to East Cornwall Harriers for putting on a brilliant event.
